Phoenix Rising from Its Flame

Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 1997

On his 8oth birthday Tony Duquette’s Malibu ranch burned to the ground destroying 21 structures and much of Duquette’s collections of antiques and his own original works of art.  Because of this tragic loss, Tony created an exhibition for the Armand Hammer museum of art and cultural center in Westwood, California called “The Phoenix Rising from Its Flames”.  The central phoenix was 28 feet tall, along with 24 other phoenix sculptures in three descending sizes.  The egg shape signified rebirth and continuance.
