Tony Duquette created the golden andirons representing Death, Pestilence, Famine and War which are seen throughout the film. These painted gesso figures were purchased by Debbie Reynolds from the MGM auction. One day the phone rang and it was Debbie Reynolds “Death is missing” she yelled into the phone. Apparently the statue of Death had been stolen or misplaced and so Tony made her a new one based on the original.

For the opening sequence Tony staged on a treadmill at MGM with the live horses “slipcovered” with rubber skins which were torn and frightening as if their skin were peeling off in the wind.
